At GDC 2022, AMD revealed that the promising version 2.0 of FSR, its super-sampling technology without machine learning, would soon be deployed on consoles.

The first game to receive support for this technology was Deathloop, with a very convincing presentation last week. In the more or less near future, AMD indicates that it will be fully supported on Xbox Series X|S consoles. Such support on PS5 should not delay, since a certain Forspoken will also use it on the latter.

The FSR extends its circle of influence

Unlike NVIDIA's DLSS, AMD's super-sampling technology does without machine learning, which allows it to be compatible with more graphics cards, even in this case those embedded in consoles. Hence AMD's punchy announcement today that FSR version 2.0 will soon be fully supported on Xbox consoles.

Better yet, sworn developers can count on the integration of FSR 2.0 in Xbox development kits, to facilitate its implementation in future games on Microsoft consoles. In its announcement post, AMD hasn't mentioned such support on PS5 yet, but the first two games to host FSR 2.0 are for now… PS5 console exclusives.

FSR being an open-source technology, nothing prevents AMD in the long term from extending its circle of influence as much to the Xbox Series as to the PS5. For the time being, however, Team Rouge has not yet established an estimate of whether Xbox games will be boosted by FSR 2.0.
