In the course of certain interviews in recent months, Microsoft implied its ambition to bring its famous Xbox Game Pass on competing consoles. But this week, the American manufacturer seems to be changing strategy.

If nothing concrete has ever been done in this direction, many players were seduced by the idea of one day being able to find the Xbox Game Pass on PlayStation or Nintendo machines. In addition, the firm behind Mario has multiplied partnerships with Xbox in recent years. This was the case by releasing the Ori or Cuphead games on its Switch and by welcoming Banjo as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

A rapprochement already aborted

Alas, a hypothetical partnership around the Game Pass is obviously no longer relevant for Microsoft. In an interview with the GamesRadar site, Phil Spencer, the boss of Xbox, brushed aside the speculation.

“We don't plan to bring it (Xbox Game Pass) to other closed platforms at this time, largely because those closed ecosystems don't want to accommodate something like Game Pass […] There are tons of open platforms on which we can grow: the web, PCs and mobile media. So, to be frank, all of our efforts will be focused on those platforms.”

However, Phil Spencer isn't ruling out the possibility of Xbox Game Pass releasing on other consoles in the more distant future.
