During the advent of a new generation of consoles, the various engines like to impress us with impressive technical demonstrations. This week, at the Game Developers Conference (GDC), Unity is speaking.

Almost two years after the presentation of the Unreal Engine 5 by Epic Games, it's Unity Technologies' turn to lift the veil on its recent performance with a demo called Enemies. This cinematic captured in real time embeds many features that allow it to achieve a fairly impressive level of photorealism.

A promise for the future?

New tools used to shape this tech demo include Screen Space Global Illumination and real-time ray tracing to achieve the most realistic lighting. DLSS technology designed by NVIDIA is also used to obtain stunning 4K rendering while maintaining perfect fluidity. For its part, the rendering of the hair is ensured via another technology soberly named Hair. Finally, the skin is also concerned with a degree of stunning realism with absolutely crazy details. We can see in particular down, pimples or even freckles.

The tools will be made available to developers during the second half of 2022. This demo presented as part of the GDC is obviously not representative of the rendering that can be obtained in game in the near future.
