Marvel's Avengers largely disappointed the fans, but also Square Enix. The Japanese publisher has spoken about the failure of the game and questions its choice of developer.

The president of Square Enix admits to having made a big mistake. Crystal Dynamics was the wrong developer to handle Marvel's Avengers.

Crystal Dynamics was the wrong choice

A few hours after announcing an about-face following negative feedback from players, Square Enix returns to the stormy development of Marvel's Avengers. Group President Yosuke Matsuda admitted to having given the game to the wrong studio, as Crystal Dynamics had never developed a "game as a service" at the time of their choosing.

The company says in its latest financial statement that it wants to learn from its mistakes and the "disappointing" performance of the action-RPG. In the future, the publisher wants to develop the game design of its future productions in line with the experience, skills and tastes of its studios and development teams.

However, Square Enix does not want to abandon GaaS (Games as a Service), the Japanese firm being convinced that this model is destined to develop even more, believing that video games will be more service-oriented. "We still have to look at how to create new experiences while incorporating this trend in game design in our games", however, qualifies the CEO.
