PUBG Creator Leaves Krafton to Found His Studio: PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions

Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene is possibly one of the most influential personalities in the video game industry in recent years. With his PUBG, the 44-year-old helped popularize the Battle Royale, which is now very well established in the landscape. He announced overnight that he was leaving Krafton Game Union to found his own studio.

PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions, that's its name, is already at work on a game that was presented to us several months ago: Prologue.

To Brendan Greene, grateful Krafton

The historic publisher of PUBG (or PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds of its full name) will however remain pegged to its foal since VentureBeat announces that the company will have a minority stake in the newly created studio.

Brendan Greene and his new teams (we are talking about 25 people) have settled in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. "I am extremely grateful to everyone at PUBG and Krafton for giving me my chance and for the opportunities they have given me over these four years," the game designer said in a statement. Today, I'm excited to take the next step in my plan to create the kind of experience I've envisioned for years. Once again, I thank everyone at Krafton for supporting my projects, and I will have more to reveal about our project soon”.

Thanks to the indecent popularity of its Battle Royale, the South Korean publisher Krafton was able to successfully undertake its IPO this year. It is now valued at over $16,5 billion. According to Sensor Tower, the mobile version of PUBG has already generated more than $5,1 billion in revenue, and the PC and console version of the title would have sold more than 70 million copies by mid-2020.

New video game experiences

If he cut his teeth by modding Arma and H1Z1, Brendan Greene wants to change course with his new studio. According to VentureBeat, the studio is aiming for the development of an open-world game this time; in this case the enigmatic Prologue, which was briefly shown to us during the Game Awards 2019.


In the columns of Forbes, "PlayerUnknown" explains that it is essentially a technical demo that allows its teams to familiarize themselves with new tools. One thing is nevertheless certain: it will not be a shooter.

“Prologue is the first step towards a new world for us. I wanted to be able to come up with something on a very large scale… I have a lot of dreams about what I would like to accomplish, but I'm not able to do it yet. This will require new technologies.”
