Dying Light 2: a second showcase dedicated to monsters and sound design

Dying Light 2: a second showcase dedicated to monsters and sound design

Like cyberpunk 2077 and night city wire at the time, Dying Light 2 exhibited again on the occasion of a second episode of Dying 2 Know, this time focusing on monsters and the sound design.

The Techland team has therefore explained to us the tragic nature of the monsters inhabiting the City, certain forms they can take and how to make them “alive” and believable. We were also treated to a fairly generous and distressing sequence of gameplay highlighting discretion within a nest of infected. Cold sweats guaranteed.

If you missed the memo, they are NOT zombies

Techland has repeatedly insisted on this point, the monsters haunting the nights of the City are not zombies, but poor souls sprayed with chemicals and having had no time to counteract the effects of the infection thanks to UV rays from the sun. The creeping infection perniciously intruding into their bodies and psyches has gradually transformed them into creatures suffering martyrdom and absolutely losing all reason.

When this infection goes too far, the poor infected mutate and turn into real nightmarish monsters, of which we had a little glimpse during this episode of Dying 2 Know. We thus discovered the basic Chomper, the Revenant, the Banshee, the Demolisher, the Howler and the Hunter, which we already knew from the previous opus. Everyone will also be entitled to an origin story in the form of a comic strip, the first focusing on a Banshee, downloadable in digital format for free on the techland.gg site.

Each monster thus has its own visual, sound (the many Chompers in particular have no less than 700 different sounds in their repertoire) and behavioral identity, so that players know immediately how to identify the threats present. Because of the few bits of humanity in them, some monsters will also show erratic behavioral patterns. They can sometimes be extremely violent and sometimes prey to an internal struggle between their psyche and their deformed body. A very appreciable background work to help make the universe of Dying Light 2 all the more believable.

Good night and good luck !

Taking up the formula that had made the success of the first opus, the monsters swarming in the City
flee at all costs from sunlight, which causes them terrible pain or makes them particularly listless. If they impose their law at night, during the day they tend to hide in the saving shade of buildings, resting while waiting for their time. Places to avoid like the plague during the day, even if the game will sometimes force us to go there during this time slot.

Techland took the opportunity to present us with a nice gameplay sequence highlighting a revised and corrected discretion, allowing more or less to weave between the monsters during their nap. As usual, nothing goes as planned in Dying Light and a relatively quiet ride quickly turns into a claustrophobic nightmare, enough to ensure a few cold sweats in the right playing conditions.

This second episode of Dying 2 Know was also an opportunity to focus on the sound design of Dying Light 2. The team in charge of this part of the project thus set out to visit many different places (and often very oppressive and abandoned) in order to offer the best immersion in the game.

This concludes what should be remembered from episode 2 of Dying 2 Know. Episode 3 will arrive soon and will focus on a crucial part of the title: combat, weapons and parkour, notably powered by Spanish professional stuntman David Belle, who also has his own character, Hakon. Dying Light 2: Stay Human is due out December 7 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
