After the release of a two-episode expansion, the recent arrival of the next-gen update on PS5/Xbox Series X|S and the ray tracing/DLSS 2.0 duo on PC, id Software is not done with DOOM Eternal.

Marty Stratton, executive producer of id Software, indeed split on Twitter a letter to the fans concerning the continuation of the development of DOOM Eternal. Among other things, a new single-player mode, codenamed Horde, will soon appear, and the multiplayer Battlemode should receive several adjustments.

Forget the Invasion, it's now a Demon Horde

Remember, during QuakeCon 2019, id Software presented us with frantic gameplay of DOOM Eternal on PC when, suddenly, demons embodied by players and players rush on the DOOM Slayer, before a black screen. The initial ambition of the Invasion mode was indeed to be able to leave its part open to the public so that other people could come and invade it in the form of the various demons present in the multiplayer mode.

Fast forward to today, where Invasion mode still hasn't seen the light of day, as priorities and the pandemic have somewhat upended the order of priorities at id Software. We finally learn that the Invasion mode is abandoned and will be replaced by a Horde mode, exclusively solo.

For the time being, no information has been shared regarding this mode, except for its name. Marty Stratton, however, believes that this new single-player mode will provide the diversity and challenge sought by DOOM Eternal fans. We should learn more at QuakeCon, held in a digital format from August 19-21 ahead.

An exit from purgatory for multiplayer?

If recent updates have filled the Battlemode multiplayer mode with new maps, we must admit that it has never really raised the crowds. The idea, however, appears attractive on paper: embody two iconic demons from the DOOM universe in an asymmetrical gameplay and coordinate their efforts to bring down the one and only DOOM Slayer. In the end, it turns out that playing the Beast is much more appealing than being its victim.

Never mind, now that the Invasion mode, which was mistakenly a way to inject Battlemode into everyone's single player game, has been abandoned, id Software intends to look into the multiplayer mode in order to to improve the formula. This should go through changes in gameplay and balancing, as well as the introduction of a competitive component based on ranks to climb.

Once again, no other information has been shared in this regard, and id Software invites us again to learn more at the QuakeCon scheduled for this month of August.
