Microsoft gave us an appointment today to discover – finally – gameplay for the long-awaited Age of Empires IV. And not content to serve us what we came for, the publisher to engrave in stone an exit window for the strategy game from Relic Entertainment.

The appointment is therefore made for the fall of 2021. Age of Empires IV will be available as soon as it is released on Game Pass PC, and sold on Steam.

The true successor to Age of Empires II

If it took two good years for Microsoft to give us news of Age of Empires IV, it was not stingy with exclusive information.

And let the fans be reassured: the DNA of the license imagined by Ensemble Studios is well and truly preserved. Equipped with a brand new rather flattering graphics engine, the strategy game still works on the same principle. A makeshift camp to transform into an imperial city by collecting resources, and an army to raise to expand its territory by triumphing over the other civilizations present.

And where Age of Empires III took “modern times” as a backdrop (XNUMXth to XNUMXth centuries), AoE IV backpedals to set down its suitcases in the Middle Ages. One of the new exclusive campaigns will also feature William the Conqueror in his conquest of England, which he wishes to wrest from the hands of King Harold.

Age of Empires IV welcomes its first nomad faction

Exactly like Age of Empires II. Players will be able to journey through four ages of technology, and take control of eight distinct civilizations at launch. For now, the English, Chinese, Delhi Sultanate and Mongols have been revealed by Microsoft.

And this last faction is a milestone in the history of the license. It is indeed the first nomadic civilization to be represented in an Age of Empires. We must therefore expect a gameplay radically different from the historical factions, in that all Mongol buildings can be moved with the troops. Also note that it will be impossible for this civilization to build walls or fortifications – logical.

Pushing the attention to detail to its climax, Relic Entertainment will not be satisfied with visual evolutions at each change of technological era. The accent of the different civilizations will also evolve to stick as closely as possible to the historical period depicted.
