Ubisoft presents Tom Clancy's XDefiant, a free-to-play competitive shooter

Teased yesterday, Ubisoft finally presents us Tom Clancy's XDefiant, for an FPS multiplayer, which is reminiscent of a certain Overwatch, in an offbeat atmosphere of the vast universe Tom Clancy.

Like Blizzard's competitive shooter, Tom Clancy's XDefiant will allow us to embody different agents called "Defiants", from well-known organizations in Tom Clancy's video game universe, each corresponding to a role with its own skills. This free-to-play title is developed by Ubisoft San Francisco, and seems to be at an early stage of development, although it is possible to register on the game's official website to try it, especially on the 5th next August.

The rumors running last month were therefore true, and the "BattleCat" project found a relatively surprising official name: Tom Clancy's XDefiant, a nervous free-to-play shooter in teams of six against six. As its title suggests, the Tom Clancy license takes on a more offbeat tone here, mixed with punk rock, and will allow us to embody Defiants who are not necessarily very heroic from factions drawn from the vast military video game universe.

Among the factions present, we have "Echelon" (from Splinter Cell, using stealth and different vision modes), "Cleaners" (from The Division, focused on flamethrowers and homemade explosives), “Outcasts” (also from The Division, using nanobots to heal their teammates and revive them in battle) and finally the “Wolves” (straight from Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, equipped with heavy weapons and energy shields).

Ubisoft San Francisco had fun creating new soldiers from these well-known factions from the Tom Clancy license games. Each faction will of course have a very specific role (support, assault, healer and tank) and will have unique skills and an ultra (think an Overwatch-style ultimate ability). It will be possible to modify the equipment of his Defiants before each game as well as while waiting for his reappearance, and also to change faction during this period of time during the game.

However, the studio insists on the fact that Tom Clancy's XDefiant is a shooter at heart and has therefore taken particular care to develop authentic weapons and accessories. The fast-paced and dynamic gunplay is at the heart of the action, something that competitive FPS enthusiasts should greatly appreciate. Everything will be powered by Ubisoft's in-house engine, the Snowdrop Engine, and what we can see during this trailer is just a glimpse of what the game could look like in its final version.

To return to the parallel with Overwatch, Tom Clancy's XDefiant will have many very specific maps around the world, subdivided into distinct categories offering different game modes. Some maps will be arenas in their own right and will offer game modes like "Domination" , “Ring Leader” or “Upload”. The others will be more linear and will present modes like “Escort” or “Zone Control”. Fans of competitive shooters should easily identify what to expect in terms of game modes for XDefiant.

Free-to-play requires, Tom Clancy's XDefiant will have a cosmetic panel (most likely focused on microtransactions) to customize the appearance of the Defiants and their equipment. During a short discussion session between the developers following the trailer, Mark Rubin, executive producer of the game, clarified that Ubisoft San Francisco intends to support its title over the long term.

If no release date has been advanced, given the early state of its development, Tom Clancy's XDefiant can be approached on August 5th during a closed test phase on PC for players and US and Canadian players (and maybe for others through a VPN). The final game will be expected on PC as well as on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Google Stadia and Amazon Luna.
