The future Nintendo Switch would aim for 4K in TV mode via DLSS, according to Bloomberg

The subject of very many rumors for the past few years, the next iteration of the Nintendo Switch is becoming more and more tangible with this latest report coming to us once again from Bloomberg.

This new model should integrate a more recent Tegra chip capable of upscaling thanks to artificial intelligence. This method would allow games to be displayed in 4K without the hardware needing to be overhauled.

A technology first intended for the PC

NVIDIA, whose SoC Tegra equips Nintendo consoles, uses proprietary upscaling technology called DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling). The technology, first used on the manufacturer's RTX graphics cards, has also made its way to the very recent Shield TV from 2019. The YouTube channel Digital Foundry has also tested the feature to get a first idea of what could give 4K gameplay on Nintendo Switch.

The Bloomberg report also specifies that in addition to an improved GPU supported by AI, this new Switch will be entitled to a better processor and more memory, without however specifying whether it is RAM. or internal storage (why not both?). Finally, Nintendo's next console would swap its LCD screen for a dapper OLED while keeping the same size of 7 inches.

Exclusive games?

With a slightly more powerful hardware, it is not impossible that Nintendo repeats the same strategy employed with the New 3DS by offering games exclusive to its more powerful console, at least that is what Bloomberg suggests.

However, we remain skeptical on this point since this strategy would segment the player base, something that Nintendo wishes to avoid as we have seen with the Nintendo Switch Lite which allows you to play almost all the games in the Switch catalog. Several developers would already have access to development kits and would work to optimize their games already released or to come for this Nintendo Switch “Pro”.
