It was the anguish of our parents who, panicked, inquired with the specialized sellers: " are there a lot of swear words in this game? ". Most of the time, the simple presence of a PEGI 18 on the cover was enough to answer this question. But a very serious study now makes it possible to establish a ranking of the most vulgar video games of all time.

More adult, but also often darker, modern video games have long since dropped the ramp of propriety. Wishing to replicate "real life", video game dialogue writers do not hesitate to lend the protagonists a flowery language. And the Fandomspot site to draw up a real classification of video games where we swear the most.

Failed, it's not GTA

The site conducted its study on the most popular games prohibited for under 18s in the IMDB database. He then dissected the script of each of them to count the number of occurrences of some of the cruder terms of the English language, the details of which we will spare you.

Here is the result of the investigation:

  • Cyberpunk 2077 (722 profanities)
  • GTA IV (691 profanities)
  • GTA V (669 profanities)
  • The Last of Us: Part II (523 profanities)
  • GTA: San Andreas (501 profanities)
  • Until Dawn (393 profanities)
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 (347 profanities)
  • Detroit: Become Human (331 profanities)
  • The Witcher 3 (277 profanities)
  • The Last of Us (84 profanities)
  • Batman: Arkham City (26 profanities)
  • GTA: Vice City (22 profanities)
  • TES V: Skyrim (17 profanities)
  • Borderlands 3 (14 profanities)
  • Batman: Arkham Knight (5 profanities)

A game remains unbeatable

Among other findings, Fandomspot notes — unsurprisingly — that the word “f*ck” is the most used (2 occurrences) of all the profanities found in the games selected. “Sh*t” follows closely with 073 appearances.

To conclude its funny study, the site takes the liberty of recalling that Cyberpunk 2077 remains however behind Scarface: The World is Yours, a GTA-like released in 2006 which totals no less than 5 occurrences of the "f word" for 688 dialogue lines. A feat of arms which earned him an entry into the Guinness World Record.
