According to a recently published patent, the Japanese branch of Sony Interactive Entertainment is working on a controller allowing to play on smartphone.

A new potential invention which follows in particular official faceplates for the PS5, or the possibility of kick voting players for payment.

A portable PlayStation, otherwise

As the image above indicates, the patent is reportedly looking at a design similar to the DualShock 4 rather than the DualSense. This new controller would consist of a left handle and a right handle, with the space in the middle to accommodate a smartphone. This space could also be flexible depending on the size of the device being placed there.

This could be another step by Sony to compete with xCloud, with a similar feature allowing PlayStation games to be played on a wide range of different devices. Such a thing on smartphones is indeed for the moment mainly possible via Remote Play, using virtual buttons. This would also be part of an ever more lively interest on the part of the Japanese manufacturer vis-à-vis the game in nomadic format, and on mobiles in particular.

However, it is currently only an idea immortalized in patent, and it is ultimately up to Sony to decide whether this invention will be exploited or not.
