Steam Deck: Valve presents its Deck Verified evaluation system

Valve continues to promote the Steam deck, its future portable console, this time presenting the game classification system Verified Decks.

This system will make it possible to know which games from the Steam library will or will not be compatible with the machine, according to four well-defined categories.

PEGI them from Steam Deck

While many developers have already been able to try the Steam Deck thanks to devkits, we have been able to see many games like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order or The Witcher III in action on it. If these titles seemed to run quite well on Valve's machine, many wondered what would happen to very demanding games like Cyberpunk 2077.

Thanks to Deck Verified, Valve intends to provide as clear an answer as possible to these questions. As the video introducing the system indicates, games in the Steam library will fall into four categories.

A green "Verified" icon will indicate that the game concerned will be perfectly compatible with the Steam Deck. A yellow "Playable" icon will indicate that a game is playable, but will require some adjustment or additional effort from the user, and a gray icon
“Unplayable” will indicate that the game is strictly incompatible with the future console from Valve. The last category, "Unknown", will serve as a catch-all indicating that compatibility with the Steam Deck has not yet been tested.

Tech Verified

More specifically, games marked as "Verified" should run smoothly in the console's default resolution (1x280 or 800x1) with graphics quality ranging from medium to high and display perfectly legible text. They will also feature full Steam Deck controls support. These will be featured on the front page of the console's Steam store.

Games marked as “Playable” should in particular pose performance problems, thus requiring some concessions in the graphics settings. Otherwise, this icon will indicate that the games will not fully support console controls or require the use of other accessories.

Finally, games marked as "Unplayable" will simply not be able to run on the Steam Deck. In particular, this category includes games requiring a VR headset. Games whose compatibility is still unknown will be categorized as Valve continues to verify them.

Given the gargantuan catalog of games on Steam, many titles will not be verified during the first arrivals of the Steam Deck scheduled for December and will continue to be evaluated after a global console release in 2022.
