Sony has threatened legal action against a company that sold black plates for its PS5. They were withdrawn from sale on October 16, 2021.
The PS5 is currently only available (and again, that's a big word in terms of stocks) in its original white color. An aesthetic that is not to everyone's taste, which has allowed third-party companies to enter the breach to offer consumers the possibility of personalizing their console.
Sony doesn't want third-party PS5 black plates
This is the case of dBrand, which has been marketing since the beginning of the year and until today black plates, the Darkplates, replacing those delivered by default with the PS5. An activity that did not please Sony, which sent a warning letter to the company.
Believing that the Darkplates reproduce the design of a product protected by patent and that they are accompanied by diverted icons of PlayStation, the Japanese group demanded the withdrawal of the sale of these accessories as well as the cessation of all communication putting in before these black plates. Otherwise, legal action would be taken.
dBrand is not the first and will not be the last in Sony's sights
dBrand has complied, but is already announcing not to give up and work for a comeback. “We have chosen to submit to the demands of the terrorists [sic]… for now,” the brand raged on Reddit, concluding an informational post on the situation with an undiplomatic “Fuck Sony.”
In the meantime, dBrand continues to sell skins for PS5 and Xbox Series, as well as for smartphones, tablets, laptops and other devices.
Sony had already forced a company called PlateStation5 to change its name. Faceplates for DualSense controllers were also marketed by Decor Evolve, and black PS5s were sold by SUP3R5. Sony is very attentive to this and does not hesitate to track down companies that offer this kind of product.
