Sony took everyone by surprise this week at CES 2022. The Japanese manufacturer has indeed unveiled new information about its next device dedicated to virtual reality… The PlayStation VR2 is coming!

Alas, we are still far from knowing everything about this device which should be extremely efficient.

Info, but no demos

For the moment, we will have to be satisfied with simple characteristics on paper since Sony has not really deigned to show its headphones in action. The same goes for the precise release date which remains a mystery. However, we now know that the headset is simply called "PlayStation VR2" and that it will be accompanied by the new PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers.

As for the VR headset itself, it will unsurprisingly connect directly to our PS5 via a USB Type-C cable. Each eye will benefit from an OLED screen with a definition of 2 x 000 pixels as well as a refresh rate between 2 and 040 Hz. As for the field of vision, it will be 90° and the separation of the lenses may be adjusted. A six-axis motion capture system, using a three-axis gyroscope and a three-axis accelerometer, will respond.

Four separate cameras will track the headset and controllers in space. An infrared camera will take care of the eyetracking. Another novelty, the vibrations will this time be directly integrated into the device to guarantee immersion at all times. A microphone and a stereo jack are included.

Surprising controllers

Sony has also taken the time to come back to the famous controllers dedicated to VR unveiled several months ago. This was an opportunity to recall that these controllers will also offer six-axis motion capture and tactile finger detection. Adaptive triggers and haptic feedback will be borrowed directly from the DualSense.

On the controller placed in the user's right hand, the PS, Options, Circle, Cross, R1, R2 and a Right Stick (R3) buttons are present. Conversely, the one on the left is entitled to the PS, Options, Triangle, Square, L1, L2 and Left Stick (L3) keys. They will run on battery while being Bluetooth 5.1 compatible.

See you in a few weeks to find out the price of the PlayStation VR2 and its accessories. The Horizon Call of the Mountain game was also confirmed for the accessory during CES.
