Kinetic Games' multiplayer ghost hunting game welcomed a big 15GB update yesterday called Nightmare. It brings many new features and changes, including a new map, an additional difficulty mode and new ghosts.

Other changes alter the gameplay and player experience of Phasmophobia, making it less certain and more terrifying. Perfect for Halloween!

New content welcome

Phasmophobia welcomed its new 0.4.0 update yesterday which should make fans very happy. To begin with, she adds a brand new map called Maple Lodge Campsite: a first outdoor map composed of a lake, tents and a wooden cabin. This one, according to the developers, is much more detailed than the previous maps and has more objects, which leads to some fps losses for the most modest configurations. We are also told that the other cards in the game will undergo a small facelift along these lines in the future.

During the Halloween event, the chances of encountering one of the four new ghosts (Onryo, The Twins, Obake, Raiju) will be increased. Doesn't that scare you enough yet? You can therefore try to flush them out in the new Nightmare difficulty mode which extends the duration of the hunts. These also become longer and longer as the ghost kills players. Additionally, pills return even less sanity, and places to hide are much rarer. The difficulty modes have also all been reworked to make them more unique and distinguishable.

More demanding gameplay

Phasmophobia now benefits from a dynamic weather system that changes with each map. Players will begin their ghost hunt sometimes in light rain, sometimes in snow, hampered by strong winds, heavy rain or fog, in addition to clear weather which will reassure. Moreover, these new weather results in a change in the functioning of the thermometer to better correspond to their effects: the thermometer will therefore be a little less reliable in detecting the room where a ghost is.

The Ouija board has been revised and will further motivate players to use it: now you will lose a lot of sanity only if the entity responds to you. Asking the board questions will only slightly affect sanity. If you irritate the ghost and you get chased, be careful, it can detect your position if you use the walkie-talkie. The latter will only emit static noises if the ghost is nearby.

A long list of gameplay changes and improvements can be found on the game's patch note on Steam, but here are a few: the chance of a ghost leaving fingerprints when interacting with an item is decreased; fingerprints only remain visible for 60 seconds; paranormal events last a minimum of one second; and the parabolic microphone can detect knocking noises on the windows. Something to spend a spooky Halloween with friends...
