In recent years, the series Person enjoyed growing popularity, thanks in particular to its fifth episode and its re-release in an expanded version. However, it is always difficult to quantify the success of a franchise unless you come across, as is the case today, an investor report published by SEGA.

This information was an opportunity to discover that the Persona license is now neck and neck with the series from which it is derived, namely Shin Megami Tensei.

The student on the way to overtake the master?

During the previous fiscal year, the Persona franchise was gradually approaching a new milestone. Initiated 25 years ago, the spin-off series ended up reaching the number of 15 million copies sold at the end of the last fiscal year, i.e. March 31, 2021.

Within a year, the franchise saw an increase of nearly 2 million in sales, propelled by the arrival of Persona 4 Golden on Steam and the release of Persona 5 Strikers on Switch. These sold 1 million and 1,3 million copies respectively.

For its part, the Shin Megami Tensei series, which began 34 years ago, peaked at 17,7 million copies but showed slower growth than the Persona franchise. The release of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster and the launch of a minor episode on mobile only increased the total by 300 sales over the last fiscal year.

Nevertheless, the original franchise is about to return to the limelight with a long-awaited new numbered episode that could increase the number of copies sold. As a reminder, Shin Megami Tensei V will be released on November 12, when it was announced shortly after the launch of the Switch.
