Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack: players find the price too high

Nintendo is experiencing its second bad buzz of the year. After the anger of players following the removal of the Switch store (as announced upstream all the same) of Super Mario Bros. 35, it is now the turn of the price of the new Nintendo Online + Expansion Pack subscription formula to take a torrent of negative opinions.

In question, prices deemed far too high for the content it has to offer for the new online subscription which will be available from October 26.

Anger growls

Three days ago, Nintendo revealed during its Animal Crossing: New Horizons Direct the price of its new Nintendo Online + Expansion Pack formula as well as its precise content which will be released on October 26th. The formula will cost 39,99 euros per year in the individual version (one account) and 69,99 euros for the family formula which can accommodate up to 8 accounts, ie 20 euros more than the basic formulas.

The subscription version with the Expansion Pack will contain nine Nintendo 64 games, 14 Megadrive games, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons' Happy Home Paradise paid DLC, available November 5. At first glance, the prices seem quite logical, given the content. However, the English video of the announcement of the prices collected, at the time of this writing, 55 negative thumbs, against only 000 positives.

The cause ? Anger over the price of the subscription which, for Americans, goes from 19,99 dollars for a basic version to 49,99 dollars for the version with the Expansion Pack, or 30 dollars more. Players consider that the prices displayed are far too high for the content offered by the pack.

Prices so high?

Remember that the Nintendo Switch Online subscription not only allows you to play online multiplayer, but also to have access to cloud backup, special offers or even access to NES and SNES games. The Expansion Pack formula therefore adds to this 23 games (even more in the future) Nintendo 64, playable in 60 Hz, Megadrive and a large DLC of one of the most popular games on the Switch, Animal Crossing.

What really shocked players were the prices deemed too aggressive for this Expansion Pack. $30 more per year for this formula is obviously a big investment when you add it to subscriptions to other services. But above all, we wonder why American prices are so high compared to European prices, apart from the exchange rate.

Don't think, however, that in Spain the fans are delighted. No. The Spanish video also received a negative ratio, although lower than the English version, with the same complaints: 20 euros more for access to simple retro game ROMs that can be found for free on any emulator , that's way too much.
