Patents are commonplace in the video game industry. But in the field, Nintendo wants to be more discreet than some of its “competitors”. However, a patent was recently discovered on the side of the Japanese firm about a controller with an intriguing shape...
A controller that looks neither Joy-Con nor the Nintendo Switch Controller Pro.
A new Nintendo controller?
A few days ago, a Twitter user by the name of SillyTweet5 noticed that Nintendo had quietly posted a controller patent online. This was filed by the Japanese giant in July 2021, but was only released last January. In summary, this patent mentions a battery, suggesting that it would therefore be a wireless controller, as well as a flexible support installed on the upper part of the controller.
While it is reminiscent of the famous Nintendo 64 controller, the design of this Nintendo-patented Controller may also be reminiscent of the Game Boy Advance form factor. As a reminder, the manufacturer has already marketed NES, SNES and Nintendo 64 controllers for games accessible via the Nintendo Switch Online subscription. It could therefore potentially be a controller directly inspired by one of the manufacturer's old platforms or a new iteration of Controller, having no connection with the retro games accessible from the online service. And patents don't always result in a finished product, so it might just never go beyond the concept stage.
Finally, if new clues have recently suggested the existence of a new console in preparation at Big N, it is obviously far too early to see the slightest link at the present time.
