In addition to server problems being corrected, in particular via a character transfer system, N is already hit with an economic crisis at play.

A must for most MMOs, but this time particularly early and in a reversed trend, since the price of products sold by players is experiencing strong deflation.

Deflation of the economy in Aeternum

According to Player Auctions, New World is seeing the value of goods sold at Le Comptoir plummet. Blame it on a currency-delivery system that's mostly centered around battling computer-controlled opponents, collecting, and completing quests.

Players are currently spending their earned gold elsewhere than at the Trading Post. This inevitably leads to a drastic drop in prices on the products sold on the latter, especially on crafting materials, yet usually very popular in MMOs.

As a result, players find it pointless to make offers at Trading Post, since doing so ultimately earns them less money than completing a quest or exploring the world. This could also eventually deter players from investing in talent points to boost their ability to collect crafting materials, since these currently sell for a pittance.

Faced with price deflation, barter is making a comeback

A natural phenomenon that has been observed in our own world in the face of a major economic crisis, the Settlers of Aeternum have found other solutions to trade. Player Auctions reports that barter has replaced Comptoir on some servers.

It is indeed currently more interesting to exchange so much of a given resource against so much of another resource, rather than waiting for desperate miners or farmers to put their harvest at a sacrifice price on the market. Adam Smith's infamous Invisible Hand has therefore found another way to thrive, but it could ultimately harm Amazon Games' game.

The studio has not yet commented on the situation, probably busy patching its MMO and making it accessible to the few million Colonists who have embarked on New World since its launch. However, a solution will have to be deployed quickly to remedy this economic crisis, before it escalates and scares away the most indomitable.
