Microsoft Flight Simulator: Asobo rewrites its engine for much better performance

The next update of Microsoft Flight Simulator risk of especially pleasing players with modest machines or those who wish to run the game in the best conditions: with a rewrite of the engine, the title of Asobo promises much better performance.

With Sim Update 5, the example shown in the video above notably doubles the number of frames per second.

Microsoft Flight Simulator soon much better optimized on PC

After several patches to improve the appearance of many parts of the world, Asobo decided to seriously address the performance of its Microsoft Flight Simulator. Although already quite well optimized, the game can indeed be particularly greedy in certain conditions. During a Q&A session, the co-founder of the Bordeaux studio, Sebastian Wloch, showed the differences to expect between Sim Update 4, the current version of the engine, and Sim Update 5, to come soon.

Concretely, on his personal PC with average components (Nvidia RTX 2060, Intel Core i7-9700kโ€ฆ) it is a question of going from around 30 FPS in ultra and 4K upscaled, to around 60 FPS with the same level of detail. Similarly, the load on the CPU drops from 100 to 75% and the use of RAM drops from 16 to 5 GB, thus allowing the system to breathe a little and encouraging 100% use of the GPU.

A constantly evolving game

Such a performance gain should also greatly reduce clipping and stutters, but also improve the VR experience. Finally, note that this gain should also concern the Xbox version of the game (coming July 27), while the latter will use DX 12, unlike the PC version which will remain (for the moment) under DX 11.

The session was also the occasion to learn that six World Updates would arrive in 2022, while the arrival of the helicopters is discussed internally.
