Because buying a virtual reality headset "Simply" to discover the latest installment in the Half-Life franchise may seem excessive.

Upon its release in April 2020, Half-Life: Alyx was in the eyes of most observers THE game that the VR world was missing for headset sales and developer investment to finally take off. Alas, almost 18 months later, if we have indeed observed a clear progression in the sale of helmets, the really convincing games are hardly numerous.

Lose as little as possible in immersion

In fact, it is not surprising to see smart guys getting into designing mods to make the latest Valve production capable of running without a virtual reality headset. To be completely honest, several examples of "conversion" started in the days following the release of Half-Life: Alyx.

The fact remains that today, a mod developed by a small team of at least four people - SoMNst, Nicklaus, Optimus97, Quackson - seems to have everyone in agreement. It's not possible to try it yet, but the video (above) is impressive and, for once, it seems that the immersive side of the game is, at least in part, preserved.

Of course, nothing will replace a virtual reality headset, but the latest version of the mod is already convincing knowing that the creators are working on new animations for weapons and various other improvements. They are not yet giving a release date for their work. Failing to compete with the VR version, such a mod will allow those who cannot use a helmet - for health or budget reasons - to discover the adventure.
