This is an announcement that has not only made people happy among the players who are waiting Gran Turismo 7. Indeed, to play the car simulation of Polyphony Digital, it will be necessary to be connected (almost) permanently to the internet.

This decision had simply been communicated through a small mention on the PlayStation Blog. To date, the Japanese studio had not justified its decision. It is now done via an interview with Kazunori Yamauchi published by Eurogamer. The president of Polyphony Digital gave his arguments to explain why an internet connection will be mandatory in the campaign mode, but also with GT Café, GT Auto, the livery editor and the Landscapes option in the photo mode.

A game forbidden to cheaters

Yamauchi said online connection is required for the campaign to "prevent cheating by people trying to modify save data." He specifies in passing that only the Arcade mode will not need this permanent connection to the Internet because the latter “has no effect on the save data”. Additionally, the livery editor will download all information from an online server.

It remains to be seen whether this justification will be sufficient in the eyes of the players. Gran Turismo 7 will be released on March 4, 2022 on PS5 and PS4.
