Did you know ? Left 4 Dead was almost a game without zombies

If it has unfortunately only been entitled to two different games during its existence, the saga Left 4 Dead has nevertheless become a must for fans of FPS. However, his fate could have been radically different!

If Left 4 Dead and its sequel have remained in everyone's memory, it is not only thanks to the unbridled action offered by the titles of Valves, but also thanks to their incredible bestiary. Indeed, who does not remember the Boomer, the Tank, the Hunter or even the Witch who spent her time whining before throwing herself on us?! Yet these delicious monstrosities almost fell by the wayside.

The zombies resist

On YouTube, the screenwriter of Left 4 Dead, Chet Faliszek, returned to the creation of the first opus. He evokes a conversation with Gabe Newell (the current boss of Valve) during the preproduction of the title. Originally, Newell didn't want any zombies in the game because he thought they were "cheesy". At that time, we were still far from more serious zombified works à la The Walking Dead.

To circumvent the problem and still include these famous monsters, Faliszek proposed to Newell to ensure that the main characters are aware of being in a kind of zombie film. This derision has made it possible to shape a game that is both fun but never takes itself seriously. It is also an ingredient that built the Left 4 Dead "legend".
