In the absence of a PC version or an update for the PS5, it is possible to (re)discover Bloodborne with a PS1 demake.

This project is the initiative of Lilith Walther, a developer who shares on Twitter a real development diary of her demake of the excellent From Software title. Called Bloodborne PSX, this deliciously retro version is playable thanks to the emulator of the same name.

Polygon hunting in the fog

Notice to retrogaming enthusiasts who have never had the opportunity to play one of From Software's best games, here is the ideal opportunity. In recent weeks, developer Lilith Walther has indeed had fun developing a demake extremely faithful to the initial game, playable on a PlayStation 1 emulator.

So here we are facing a dystopia where Bloodborne would have been released twenty years earlier than expected, four generations of Sony consoles in advance. The result seems particularly successful and offers gameplay faithful to the original game. Demake obliges, it incorporates a retro twist to the original game while retaining all its substance in glorious 480p resolution.

A beautiful representation of what the game could have been on PS1, with the eventual ambition to offer the iconic landscapes and creatures of the original game, but with much less polygons and details. We even find this fog so characteristic to overcome the technical limitations of the mythical PlayStation 1 vis-à-vis the depth of field.

This demake still needs blood echoes to develop its build

With the help of the Unreal Engine, Lilith Walther tried as much as possible to offer a mix between retrogaming and newer technologies to make the gameplay dynamic.

Its demake is still far from being finished, but there is no doubt that its creator will continue its work in view of its popularity. A fine feat in any case, which is part of a movement that has become very fashionable lately.

In fact, we have recently witnessed a boom in independent projects aiming to offer demake versions of popular games. Disco Elysium was notably entitled to its Game Boy version demake recently. A youtubeur also had fun making a PS1 video demake of Cyberpunk 2077, to gently poke fun at the quality of the PS4 and Xbox One versions of CD Projekt Red's title.
