This is an announcement that is sure to divide the Community: Electronic Arts has signed a partnership with Middle-Earth Enterprises and announced a mobile game The Lord of the Rings.

Called The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth, it will be a free-to-play RPG involving collecting heroes, centered – we give you a thousand – on Middle-earth.

After Warcraft Arclight Rumble by Blizzard, it's the turn of another American giant to split the announcement of a mobile game in an iconic universe of heroic-fantasy. For now, all we know about it visually is the illustration in the introduction to this article, shared by Electronic Arts.

As for Middle-Earth Enterprises, it is the company granting the licensing rights for adaptations touching on the monumental universe of JRR Tolkien. It was therefore she who gave the green light to the publisher to develop a mobile game in the latter.

According to Fredrica Drotos, Director of Marketing and Licensing at Middle-Earth Enterprises, The Lord of the Rings: The Heroes of Middle-earth should "respect Tolkien's literary works to the letter".

The gameplay of this mobile game will involve turn-based battles across Middle-earth, from both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit books and movies, alongside and against iconic collectible characters. In addition to a single-player campaign, the game will feature cooperative and competitive multiplayer.

As for a release date… as Gandalf would say: “An announcement is never late. She arrives precisely at the scheduled time. But be aware that the first beta phases will start this summer.
