Warframe: a mobile version, cross-play and The New War announced during TennoCon 2021

Annual meeting dedicated to the MMO free-to-play successful Warframe (except for a 2020 edition canceled due to the health situation), TennoCon 2021 was rich in announcements for a title that has continued to grow exponentially since its release in 2013.

During a stream of more than six hours, the Digital Extremes team spoiled its fans with various giveaways, panels discussing the development of the game and its artistic direction, and also highlighted its community, in particular through a cosplay contest. But the biggest piece of this TennoCon did not arrive for the most curious until around five o'clock on the replay introducing this article, and lists all the new things coming to Warframe.

The first big announcement from this TennoCon, shown live by a team that is visibly passionate and enthusiastic about its now eight-year-old baby, is the arrival of Warframe on smartphones. Originally available on PC, before being exported over the years to PS4, Xbox One and Switch, then moving to the next generation on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S very recently, the Digital Extremes title will soon be officially on everyone. current media.

This announcement comes at the right time for the team to also introduce us to the arrival of cross-play and cross-progression on Warframe. Each member of the team was thus able to find themselves in the plains of Eidolon on a different platform in order to illustrate this very welcome novelty. One of them was even able to switch from the smartphone version to a console version on the same account without transition, in order to prove its effectiveness.

The team concluded this segment by presenting us with a short trailer telling us that cross-play and cross-progression are still in development, and will therefore be deployed at an as yet undetermined date.

The New Lore

The real piece de resistance of this TennoCon 2021, initially announced in 2019 but first delayed because it needed more time, then because of the coronavirus pandemic, The New War was presented in more detail as the highlight of the show. It will be a solo quest to be unlocked as we travel, which is not only one of the most important pieces of lore in the game to date, but also one of Digital's most ambitious projects. Extremes.

This brand new quest should indeed teach us more about the origin of the Tenno and Lotus, an emblematic character since the origins of the game, considered missing in the currently known lore. So we were treated to a fairly unique gameplay sequence for Warframe, and in many ways. It begins with a cinematic illustrating the work done by Digital Extremes on the staging, with a major planetary assault launched by the Sentients, a particularly dangerous mechanical species in the Warframe universe.

Then comes the gameplay itself which will first put us in the shoes, for the first time in the history of the game, of Grineer and Corpus soldiers, antagonistic factions since the genesis of Warframe in 2013. We still see once the effort focused on the staging, as well as on gameplay elements rarely explored until then, such as controlling pets, puzzles or infiltration. Nothing particularly amazing, the action quickly becoming repetitive despite a relatively short gameplay sequence, but the effort is to be welcomed.

To conclude this gameplay sequence, Digital Extremes introduces us to a veteran Tenno by the name of Teshin, in a mission apparently aimed at rubbing shoulders with Ballas, a very ancient being presumed to be one of the creators of our legendary Warframes, which we will be able to subsequently find in order to continue this quest a priori large-scale. It was obviously only a brief introduction to this vast project in development for the past two years, the release of which is therefore planned on all known platforms in 2021.
