New proof, if it were missing, that Final Fantasy XIV is the most popular MMORPG of the moment, Square Enix has just announced that it will be temporarily impossible to acquire a version of its game. And this also concerns the creation of accounts for the free trial.

Fans know it well: “patch day, no play”. Only the popularity of Final Fantasy XIV is such, since the release of the Endwalker extension, that it is simply impossible for a large majority of players to access the servers of the title for two weeks.

An extreme and unprecedented measure

We can hardly imagine the contrasting feeling that must cross the teams working on Final Fantasy XIV. On the one hand, the success of their game must make them smile. On the other hand, the major server problems that affect the experience of players poses big challenges for them.

Challenges such as these require producer Naoki Yoshida to speak on the game's blog. credited to subscribers' accounts, in addition to the 14 days already offered a few days ago.

But all this is just a prelude to a more extreme measure: the sale of the Starter and Complete editions of Final Fantasy XIV is simply suspended until further notice. This concerns both physical and digital editions, and also affects the creation of accounts allowing free access to FF XIV. “While players with an active subscription have priority login, free trial players cannot log in at times other than late night or early morning. Therefore, we are also temporarily suspending the ability to register for the free trial. “says Yoshida. However, upgrading from the base game to an extension remains possible without constraint.

All advertising campaigns suspended

To further weigh down this unprecedented decision, Square Enix will suspend all advertising campaigns for its MMORPG in the coming days. The idea, we understand, is to nip in the bud a hype that has gotten out of control. Rather paradoxical for a company whose raison d'être is precisely to sell its products.

But anyone who's been trying to log into Final Fantasy XIV for two weeks knows the situation is critical. In addition to endless queues, we also learn that a flaw dating from version 1.0 of the game (!) Is responsible for the now famous "Error 2002" which sometimes occurs when you want to connect to your account. Identified, the bug will be corrected by Square Enix when the 6.0.1 update is deployed on Tuesday, December 21.

Finally, and among other announcements, Naoki Yoshida confirms that new servers will be open in early 2022, especially in North America and Europe. What, perhaps, to consider an upturn and the gradual resumption of sales for Final Fantasy XIV.
