Electronic Arts chose to keep its license Need for Speed in the garage a little longer. The next episode that was supposed to land this year will finally arrive late... and there are several reasons for that.
In February 2020, the American publisher announced that Criterion Games would finally resume development of the Need for Speed saga. Before that, the Ghost Games studio had produced three consecutive episodes which had all the trouble in the world to convince the press and the players. Thus, a new episode was supposed to be released in 2021, but this will not ultimately be the case.

Battlefield above all
The Polygon site reports to us that Electronic Arts has chosen to postpone the next Need for Speed to next year. Indeed, the publisher has asked Criterion Games to help DICE on the development of Battlefield 6. The FPS will be the big game of late 2021 for EA and the first in the series to be released since Battlefield V in 2018. The sixth opus is logically expected at the turn on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. He will therefore try to impress!
This postponement of Need for Speed is also explained by the recent acquisition of Codemasters. Indeed, the studio already had at least one racing game planned for 2021 and Criterion could have been indirectly confronted with this other production, however published by Electronic Arts.
