Team17 and the NFTs: the idyll lasted only one day

Very proud to announce at the end of January a project combining its iconic Worms and the NFT, Team17 had to quickly backpedal.

The British publisher indeed very quickly turned around when many studios and communities under its aegis strongly expressed their dissatisfaction with the project.

A project mixing Worms and NFT that falls through

On January 31, Team17 announced with great fanfare a project called "MetaWorms", which promised the creation of ecological NFTs of our favorite earthworms. The idea was therefore to be able to create your unique and personalized Worms, officially registered in the blockchain. An idea that is of course reminiscent of Ubisoft Quartz.

Only, the maneuver was very badly seen by many studios under the supervision of Team17. Ghost Town Games (Overcooked), Aggro Crab Games (Subway Midnight) and PlayTonic (Yooka-Laylee) thus made their position on NFTs and the Team17 project very clear shortly after the announcement via press releases on Twitter.

Where Ubisoft maintains its positions on the subject, Team17 did not turn a deaf ear to this violent outcry and announced the next day the abandonment of the MetaWorms project.

Team17 indeed indicates that “it listened to its Team members, its partners and its communities, as well as their concerns vis-à-vis the project” and considered it more prudent to throw its plans into oblivion.

Will this story set a precedent when many major video game players are eyeing the side of NFTs? Only the future (and the price of Ethereum?) will tell us.
