System Shock: 7 minutes of gameplay for the remake of the horrific FPS

After months of silence, Nightdive Studios surprises everyone by uploading a 7-minute gameplay video to present in more detail its remake of System Shock, a horror FPS released in 1994.

Developed by Looking Glass Studios and published by Origin Systems in 1994, System Shock is undeniably one of the licenses that helped elevate the first-person shooter genre to new heights. The best single-player, multiplayer, and co-op shooters still benefit from its legacy, and its fans are keeping a close eye on this remake by Nightdive Studios.

System Shock: 7 minutes to discover the Citadel space station

2072, Citadel space station. You are a hacker with abilities enhanced by a neural implant. Your objective: counter the plans of SHODAN, an artificial intelligence that has become particularly hostile. On your way, you will have to fight - or bypass - many enemies and solve some puzzles. A clever mix between RPG and shooter, System Shock allows free exploration of the corridors of the Citadel space station, thanks to its non-linear progression system.

Despite excellent reviews from the specialist press, the game met with modest commercial success upon its release. It did, however, allow Looking Glass Studios, in conjunction with Irrational Games, to release a sequel, System Shock 2, in 1999 through Electronic Arts. Almost 15 years later, in 2013, the rights to the franchise were purchased by Nightdive studios, which would release an improved version of the game two years later: System Shock Enhanced.

Since 2016, they have been working on this remake of the title, of which you can have a fairly precise overview, thanks to this 7-minute gameplay video. No release date has been announced, but it's expected to hit PC, PS4, and Xbox One by the end of the year. Note that this upcoming remake of System Shock is already available for pre-order on Steam, GOG and the Epic Games Store. Those who pre-order the title will receive System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition for free when it releases.
