The monument that laid the foundations of walking simulator as we know them today, Dear Esther, celebrates 10 years since its release. For the occasion, the game of The Chinese Room is offered on Steam.
Offer ends tomorrow, Wednesday, February 16 at 16 p.m., and is for the Landmark Edition.
The dad of the walking sims
February 14, 2012 was released for the first time on PC Dear Esther. If it was able to cause controversy by a fringe of players because of its very limited gameplay mechanics, Dear Esther laid the foundations for a new way of playing and telling stories in video games. Without the success of Dear Esther, there probably wouldn't have been Gone Home, no Firewatch, no What Remains of Edith Finch. Modern walking simulators, as we know them, were shaped by the success of The Chinese Room.
This one is therefore available for free for a limited time in its Landmark version which includes design comments that can be activated by exploring the Scottish island of the game. It should be noted that The Chinese Room's next game, Little Orpheus, will be released in two weeks, on March 1st.
