Steam Deck: what does the console update have in store?

The Valve console has just obtained a new update which gives access to new features. They relate in particular to improvements on the joysticks and in terms of text input. But that's not all…

Indeed, a beta has also been deployed for the Steam Deck to offer a possibility eagerly awaited by players!

For enhanced ergonomics

Since it was only just released, the Steam Deck is still missing a few core features. But Valve intends to optimize its machine over the course of the updates and the one that has just arrived brings its share of improvements. From now on, a calibration screen is used to adjust the dead zones of the joysticks or even their haptic force. This configuration also extends to the sticks of the external controllers.

There is also something new regarding input via the console keyboard since the user can now use both thumbs at the same time to type text thanks to the dual touchpad input. A virtual keyboard is also appearing in desktop mode. Plus, your Steam Deck will finally remember the networks it's been connected to in the past. It is therefore no longer necessary to type the password each time. Finally, on the display side, the “B” back button no longer appears in the quick access menu.

A bit of Windows 11

Now let's talk about the beta that Valve released this week. In particular, it adds support for the fTPM (Firmware Trusted Platform Module) for the AMD processor in the Steam Deck. This module is mandatory to perform the installation of Windows 11 on any device. And the portable console can now enjoy this privilege. Players can then take advantage of the gaming features of Microsoft's operating system. But there is a bone!

Valve wanted to remind you that it is only a beta. Bugs are therefore on the program. Also not to be overlooked is the fact that official audio drivers for Steam Deck with Windows are still not available. In conclusion, if installing Windows 11 on the console is a rather attractive prospect, it is not recommended for the moment pending perfect compatibility.
