PS5: declining results in the face of the shortage

The month of January ended in style for Sony with the announcement of the acquisition of Bungie. However, despite very correct figures, the PS5 suffered a first setback in terms of its sales.

The Japanese manufacturer blames this endless shortage of components that drags on and on.

Waiting for stock...

Sony therefore took stock of its financial results obtained by its gaming branch during the third quarter of its fiscal year (which runs from October 1 to December 31, 2021). During this period, the Japanese firm shipped 3,9 million PlayStation 5s worldwide. This time last year, shipments reached 4,5 million units. In total, the PS5 has shipped 17,3 million units since its launch in November 2020.

In the same period of time (ie at the end of December 2014), the PS4 had already climbed to 20,2 million units. Sony explains that this poor performance is linked to the shortage of components and in particular of semiconductors. The manufacturer was therefore unable to meet the strong market demand.

Service games in the line of sight

Let's continue with the big numbers since PlayStation Plus now has 48 million subscribers, a very slight increase from the 47,4 million announced during the previous fiscal year. Remember that the service should soon undergo a major change with the launch of a new offer currently known under the code name Project Spartacus.

Finally, Sony also explained that the games service will be at the heart of its strategy over the next few years. The manufacturer wants to market 10 games of this genre by March 2026. The recent takeover of Bungie is undoubtedly no stranger to this new strategy.
