It's not tomorrow the day before that the PlayStation 5 will be available en masse at dealers in Spain and Navarre… and certainly not for Christmas.

The logistics and supply issues faced by all players in the semiconductor industry know no borders or respite. Thus, Takashi Mochizuki of Bloomberg learned that Sony had to deal with still strong shortages obviously having an impact on the production of PlayStation 5 consoles, in particular.

A reduction of one million consoles

The journalist explains that Sony was forced to revise downwards its production target for the current fiscal year (March 2021-March 2022) and that it no longer expected to have produced "only" 15 million consoles instead of the 16 million one time discounted. Takashi Mochizuki specifies that his source wishes to remain anonymous, but that this reduction will obviously make the objective of 14,8 million PlayStation 5s sold by the end of March more tense.

Sony is obviously not the only one to encounter this kind of problem and, one after the other, all players in the video game market have been forced to review their objectives. A few days ago, Nintendo itself explained that it had to reduce its Switch production by around 20% and find itself unable to reach its goal of 30 million consoles produced by the end of March 2022. .

Just yesterday, Valve was forced to postpone the very first deliveries of its Steam Deck. The machine was to arrive in the hands of users who were the fastest to pre-order the beast in December: it is now only a question of deliveries during the month of February.

Late on the PlayStation 4?

While demand for PlayStation 5 remains at its highest, being unable to produce enough consoles is obviously a significant shortfall for Sony. The company estimated to be able to reach a turnover of 22 billion euros by March 31, 2022, which would have been the best performance in its history. It may be forced to revise its claims downwards.

More symbolically, these production delays cause the PS5 to somehow lose pace with the PS4. The new console got off to a better start than its big sister, but since the start of the current fiscal year, it's been steadily losing ground. It is thus a question of 5,6 million PS5 sold between April and September 2021 when the PS4 had sold 6,2 million copies in its time. Everything suggests that things will not work out for at least several months.
