Xbox Game Pass for PC recently disappeared to make way for PC Game Pass. A strategy that should help clarify the subscription offer.

A few weeks ago, Microsoft formalized the renaming of Xbox Game Pass for PC, which then simply became PC Game Pass. And we know more about the reasons for this choice.

Xbox + PC = confusion

In a video published by ROG Global (the gaming branch of the manufacturer ASUS) on the occasion of CES 2022, Jason Beaumont, executive at Xbox, explains that the old name of the service could be a source of confusion among uninformed consumers. They could mistakenly think that they needed an Xbox console to enjoy it, which is absolutely not the case.

"We were hearing a lot of gamers say, 'Listen, people don't understand that Game Pass has PC games.' prevailed," says the manager.

PC Game Pass was already used by Xbox employees

The new name, PC Game Pass, removes the reference to Xbox and thus becomes much clearer: to play, you only need a computer. Jason Beaumont says that internally, the teams were already talking about "PC Game Pass", which helped decide to make the switch.

As a reminder, Game Pass PC offers a separate catalog from Xbox Game Pass for consoles. While many games are available in both, some titles are exclusive to Xbox consoles, and others to PC.

Also be aware that if your PC isn't powerful enough to run the games you want and you have a strong internet connection, only Xbox Game Pass Ultimate provides access to xCloud to run titles on any screen. The Cloud catalog is also different from the Xbox and PC catalogs.
