Legion Play: Lenovo is preparing a portable Android console to compete with the Steam Deck

Legion Play: Lenovo is preparing a portable Android console to compete with the Steam Deck

A Lenovo Legion Play portable console between Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch, does that tell you? The first information about him does not necessarily bode well for his future.

A leak reports the existence of a portable console in development on the side of Lenovo: the Legion Play. Images and information about it were posted by liliputing, who found it hidden on the Lenovo Germany and Lenovo Japan websites. Apparently, the manufacturer had planned to announce the device during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2021, which ultimately did not happen. Is it because the project has been postponed, or purely canceled, we do not know.

A console for mobile games and cloud gaming

The Legion Play is presented as a portable Android console "designed to play AAA games". In particular, mention is made of Cloud gaming, which suggests that it will be necessary to go through one of these services for the game. We are therefore on a different strategy than Valve with its Steam Deck, which allows Cloud gaming, but also allows you to play gourmet games locally.

A choice that may seem ambitious when 5G is still far from being democratized. We imagine in any case that the console will be compatible with mobile networks, because the interest of playing on a portable console only in Wi-Fi seems quite limited. In the image below, we can see in any case in the upper right corner an icon symbolizing mobile connectivity, between those for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

The possibility of streaming games from its library on its Legion Play is also mentioned, without further details on this subject for the moment. And of course, the console will have access to the Play Store to play the mobile titles available on the store.

Do the needs for such a console really exist today?

On the technical sheet side, the leak speaks of a 7-inch screen with a 16: 9 ratio with Full HD definition and HDR 10 support, two speakers, two vibration motors, a battery with a capacity of 7 mAh and built-in controllers.

This Lenovo Legion Play could be an alternative to the Steam Deck, which is already announced to be out of stock until the second half of 2022. The proposal still seems shaky if it focuses above all on streaming video games, especially since a priori, it does not ultimately do much more than an Android smartphone equipped with a controller or an accessory to integrate controls.

Besides, Lenovo may be aware of this, and that would be why the product was not finally presented a few months ago. It remains to be seen whether the brand aims to improve its formula or will simply throw in the towel.
