Released November 9 on PC and home consoles, Jurassic world evolution 2 brilliantly plunges us back into the universe of the cinematographic saga. With its large bestiary of superbly animated dinosaurs and its fan service including the return of John Hammond, let's see what this management game for the general public is worth.

After a pleasant first opus released in 2018, Frontier Developments returns with Jurassic World Evolution 2. This management game that allows us to create and manage our own dinosaur park includes four modes: first, a campaign that takes place after the events of the film Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, laying the foundations for cohabitation between humans and dinosaurs, outside of Isla Nublar. Then, the Chaos Theory missions, which allow you to revisit the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World films in order to avoid the disasters that take place there, thanks to better management of the parks. Obviously, a Sandbox mode is available to give free rein to our imagination and create the park of our dreams. Finally, a Challenge mode offers to create a five-star park in a limited time.

In total, Jurassic World Evolution 2 offers more than 75 prehistoric species to discover, capture and customize, including flying and marine species.

A rather boring campaign mode

Campaign Mode features five missions that follow the events of the Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom movie. Dinosaurs live and thrive all over the world, outside the borders of Isla Nublar, whose volcano has erupted. It is therefore a question of creating reserves in order to preserve the species of dinosaurs and ensure their good cohabitation with humans.

For film lovers, it will be a pleasure to find their main characters, namely Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) and Owen Grady (Chris Pratt), but also (and above all) Professor Ian Malcolm played by Jeffrey Goldblum. Unfortunately, that's about it. Indeed, the Campaign mode of Jurassic World Evolution 2 is… just boring.

A tutorial aftertaste “for dummies”

It is quite roughly a small tutorial, very summary, on the management of enclosures and staff, on which we stuck a post-it script. Each time, we arrive in an area in which dinosaurs live in freedom. It is therefore necessary to capture them (or only some, in particular the most dangerous carnivores for the human species) and place them in enclosures that respect their well-being.

Some missions offer a little more action, such as direct control of the helicopter and its gunner on board to put the dinosaurs to sleep using a hypodermic rifle, or even Jeep rides. However, the set is extremely repetitive. Each mission lasts a little over an hour, and it's ultimately far too long for what we have to do.

It lacks challenge

In addition to being sorely lacking in challenge, because the whole thing is excessively simple, the most frustrating element is ultimately the stopwatch. Indeed, once we have captured dinosaurs and placed them in an enclosure, it is necessary to meet their need for comfort with a minimum score of 80%.

Water, trees, grass, live bait or nuts on the ground... The game takes us by the hand and explicitly tells us what to add to satisfy our dinosaurs. So we pause the game and make the necessary adjustments. We restart the game and surprise, our dinosaurs love their new environment! However, the mission is not validated.

Because there is a stopwatch running. And who keeps counting down the time, even if the quest is completed. So you have to wait, a minute and a half here, two minutes there. Wait, wait. Of course, we can take the opportunity to observe our dinosaurs, which are, it must be admitted, beautiful and very well animated, with stunningly realistic gestures. But the wait remains a frustrating part of Campaign mode.

Chaos Theory: Fulfilling John Hammond's Dream

Once the Campaign mode is complete (after five to six hours of play), Jurassic World Evolution 2 invites us to switch to Chaos Theory mode. This is a series of "what if..." scenarios related to the films of the saga. These are therefore five missions that invite us to better manage the dinosaur parks than the characters of the films in order to avoid the disasters that take place there.

In addition to allowing us to reunite with some beloved characters, such as the idealist John Hammond and his dream of recreating extinct species by cloning, the Chaos Theory mode finally shows us the full potential of Jurassic World Evolution 2. According to the film selected , it is either a question of looking for dinosaur DNA in order to create new ones, or of capturing them to place them in our park / natural reserve.

For this, we can count on our team of scientists, to be recruited according to their skills (logistics, genetics and well-being of the dinosaurs) and advantages (reduction of the time of expeditions, research, egg incubation, etc. ). We won't go so far as to say that they have to be managed: just give them time off when they get irritated, and that's it. It's pretty sketchy.

Money is not a problem

Then comes the commercial aspect, which is quite complete. So, let it be said right away: Jurassic World Evolution 2 is, like the previous opus, a casual game aimed at the general public. There is no real difficulty, especially in terms of finances. Money is flowing, so any mistakes we can make are easily fixed, and we can indulge in a few dreams of grandeur.

We must satisfy visitors by offering them a maximum of shops, toilets, hotels or even bunkers (just in case, because beyond the dangerousness of our bestiary, a few sandstorms and tornadoes are appearing). With a well-stocked bank account and fairly unlimited abilities, getting stars is not very difficult.

Diversification of buildings and staff

Compared to the first installment of the license, Jurassic World Evolution 2 offers a more complete experience for managing dinosaurs. The design of these big beasts takes place in three phases: DNA sequencing, then the player's selection of eggs to place in the incubator and the time before hatching.

The rangers are finally supported to ensure the well-being of the dinosaurs. If they are still responsible for checking the good shape of the animals, feeding them with live bait or even carrying out anesthesia, it is now the doctors of the paleontology center who are responsible for diagnosing their illnesses and treating them.

There again appears a new functionality: that of refueling for the various staff vehicles (cars and helicopters), as well as that of the generators which maintain the electrified fences, and prevent our small and large carnivores from devouring tourists! It is therefore necessary to remember to check these points regularly.

And unfortunately, it all ends up getting repetitive too…

Sandbox and Challenge mode for dinosaur buffs

Once the Campaign mode as well as the Chaos Theory missions have been completed to ensure a good grip of Jurassic World Evolution 2, we are invited to embark on the Sandbox and Challenge modes, which influence each other one and the other. Indeed, the first offers nine playing fields, eight of which are blocked. And to access it, you have to complete certain Challenge mode maps, but also certain Chaos Theories mode missions, by completing certain objectives.

Challenge mode offers five cards, four of which can also be unlocked by achieving stars in other missions in the game. appearance to customize the look of his dinosaurs, and thus make them unique.

Before starting a challenge, you have to select the difficulty, from easy to hard, to automatically adjust the starting cash (which is still not a problem), but also the type of dinosaurs, the research costs, the salary of the personnel or even the rest time of scientists. But even in difficult, it remains casual and accessible to less experienced players.

Jurassic World Evolution 2 : l'avis de JVFR

Jurassic World Evolution 2 is a good management game for the general public, thanks to a difficulty ranging from very low to moderate (in rare moments of crisis). Fans of Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park and its sequels will enjoy diving back into the universe of the saga, with finally the possibility of not repeating the annoying mistakes of certain characters.

And then, it's simply beautiful. The dinosaurs and the backgrounds are neat, as is the animation of the animals, which react intelligently to their environment. We take pleasure in observing a pteranodon drinking, quietly installed on a rock in its aviary. We take a little less when it comes to monitoring the velociraptors who seem to want to eat our rangers!

Fans of management games will probably find the whole thing a little light, and the lack of difficulty could bore them very quickly. Unless you consider it for what it is: a relaxing game, albeit a bit time-consuming...

Fans of dinosaurs and the Jurassic Park and/or Jurassic World movies will love creating and managing their own park, as well as watching their dinosaurs, which are beautifully animated and react intelligently to their surroundings. However, the lack of challenge ends up making the whole thing repetitive and boring, since money is never an issue. As for fans of management games, they will probably not find their account.
