Half Life: a 20-year-old easter egg has finally been discovered

Sometimes a easter egg is so well hidden that the most observant players can take several years to discover it. This is what just happened on Half Life Decay, an unknown opus in which a little mystery has been unearthed.

And as much to say that the biggest fans of the license would have had a hard time finding it via a conventional method…

A very discreet Half-Life

First, let's recall what Half-Life: Decay is. This is an extension of the first opus which was released on PlayStation 2 in November 2001. Developed by Gearbox Software, this title is playable in cooperation with the possibility of embodying Gina Cross and Colette Green, two scientists but also colleagues of the famous researcher Gordon Freeman. It has become nearly impossible to find a copy of the game now, since it was only included on the Sony Underground demo disc via PlayStation Magazine UK.

But Half-Life: Decay can be found for download on the internet… and it's what one player found an easter egg about two decades after the game launched. We owe the find to MarphitimusBlackimus on YouTube. Thus, the "Easter egg" (for the Spanish translation) in question is at the very end of the campaign.

An easter egg that makes sparks

The last minutes of this Half-Life: Decay are lived through Gina's eyes. But to see the easter egg, the user made changes to view the scene from Colette's perspective. In the video at the top of this article, we can briefly see a broken computer arcing. These repeat and MarphitimusBlackimus noticed that they form the letters M and A.

Presumably, the initials "MA" would refer to Matthew Armstrong, at the time level designer at Gearbox. He used to conceal his initials in various games, such as on the Team Fortress 2 Classic map. And he obviously did the same thing in Half-Life: Decay. A rather nice little wink!
