A first wall to climb

That's it, here we are. The most anticipated esports event of the year by fans, the League of Legends World Championship, is about to begin, and the bets are on to see who will win the precious sesame this season. But many matches are planned before seeing the end of it in this very special 2021 edition. Indeed, this year, the number of teams has been reduced to 22 instead of 24 (2 teams less for the qualifying phases), since Vietnam will not be able to be represented because of the country's health situation.

Everything will therefore begin on October 5 with the qualifying phases which will see 4 teams from the main regions of the world compete for 10 days. They have been divided into two pools and will have to play BO1 against each other team in their group. The best team of each group will go directly to the group phase and the others will have to decide by BO3. Suffice to say that it will not be easy.

We find in Pool A: HLE (Korea), Infinity (Latin America), LNG (China), Peace (Australia, with two players who will not be able to participate in the event) and Red Canids (Brazil).
In Pool B: Cloud9 (North America), Beyond Gaming (Southeast Asia), Unicorns of Love (Commonwealth of Independent States), Galatasaray Esport (Turkey) and Detonation Focus Me (Japan).

Undecided group stages

The group stages will start over the period of October 11-13 and end with matches split between October 15-18. At the end of this first major phase, the knockout stages in three winning sets can begin with the quarter-finals from October 22 to 25, the semi-finals on October 30 and 31, and finally the grand final on October 6. november.

Here are the groups composed of the 12 teams already qualified, which will then be joined by the 4 best of the qualifications:
  • Group A: Damwong Kia (the Korean team defending world champions), Funplus Phoenix (China) and Rogue (Europe)
  • Group B: Edward Gaming (China), 100 Thieves (North America) and T1 (Korea, new home of the legendary Faker who is making a comeback in the World Championships)
  • Group C: PSG Talon (Southeast Asia), Fnatic (Europe) and RNG (China)
  • Group D: Mad Lions (Europe), Gen.G (Korea) and Team Liquid (North America)

See you from October 5 to follow these League of Legends World Championships behind closed doors which will take place in hall A of the closed Laugardalshöll stadium in Reykjavik, Iceland.
