With Battlefield 2042, DICE Studios and Electronics Arts want to revolutionize the FPS of multiplayer warfare and pushing the limits of the franchise. If in the past the latter was marked by a sustained pace of release, the studios have slowed down the pace given the magnitude of the next part of Battlefield.

However, with the ambitions now displayed by the various studios working on the license, the idea of returning to a two-year interval between each release is gaining ground in the minds of leaders.

An evolving philosophy

Over the past decade, the Battlefield license has had many representatives: Battlefield 3 in 2011, Battlefield 4 in 2013, Hardline in 2014, Battlefield 1 in 2016 and, finally, Battlefield 5 in 2018. We are therefore talking here about five opus in just under seven years.

That breakneck pace has since slowed down to set up a longer development time, as just over three years will separate the release of Battlefield 2042 from the franchise's previous representative. However, beyond a longer release time, Electronic Arts adopts another philosophy for Battlefield.

During a recent conference call with the publisher's investors, Andrew Wilson, CEO of Electronic Arts, spoke on the issue. According to him, a return to a two-year rhythm could be envisaged, but would go against the current of the commitment made around the franchise, in particular with Battlefield 2042.

The next game is, in fact, a basis for the future of the series and intends, with its Battlefield Portal and Hazard Zone game modes, to reinvent the franchise to consider it as a service. For example, the recently revealed Battlefield Portal features massive community content capable of extending the game's lifecycle by a year or two.

Admittedly, Electronic Arts is considering this strategy but is keeping its eyes on the experience offered by Battlefield 2042, which is expected to be released on October 22 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X| S.
