Announced at The Game Awards 2020, the enigmatic action-RPG from Obsidian Entertainment expected on PC et Xbox Series X|S would have changed engines.

According to the LinkedIn page of Aaron Dubois, artistic director of visual effects for the studio, the development of this new game, which we still know little about, would be done around the Unreal Engine 5.

The magic engine?

Last month, Epic Games proudly announced that Obsidian was among the studios working on Unreal Engine 5 for their upcoming projects.

However, there was no indication that Avowed would be affected. The Outer Worlds 2, expected much later, seemed a more suitable candidate. It was not until the LinkedIn page of Aaron Dubois, working on Avowed, spilled the beans.

According to a status report last October, the game is in a playable alpha stage and development is well advanced. This report also indicated that Avowed used an improved version of the engine of The Outer Worlds first of the name.

The transition to Unreal Engine 5, however, should make Obsidian's ambitions for its new first-person RPG set in the Eora (Pillars of Eternity) universe more convincingly come to life.

While the release window for Avowed is still nebulous, given the state of the project, it could be that a release next year is possible. We should thus see Avowed again after two years of absence during the Xbox Games Showcase expected next month.
