World of Warcraft: a new version or extension is looming

While the extension Shadowlands draws to a close, the next adventures in the vast universe of World of Warcraft are already talking about them.

Conducive to leaks and meticulous excavations by dataminers, Blizzard's mastodon MMO would have already sold the wick on a next version or extension.

We owe this discovery to Martin Benjamins, a well-known dataminer for World of Warcraft. This one would have unearthed in the files of the game an encrypted product bearing the mysterious name of “wowdev3”.

The knowledgeable states that the term “wowdev” is generally used for the Retail version of the game, that is to say the most recent, currently on Shadowlands. Its “wowdev2” version is used for the Classic build, currently on Burning Crusade. Logically,
"wowdev3" could be used for any other World of Warcraft branded product, or a brand new extension.

Needless to say, speculation has been rife as to what this new term means. With the Shadowlands expansion nearing its end, a new expansion on the Retail version seems like the safest bet. Likewise, a Classic version of Wrath of the Lich King, one of the game's most popular expansions, is certainly not to be ruled out.

Other more outlandish hypotheses, but not meaningless: a console port of World of Warcraft, in the wake of the historic takeover of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft; or, let's be crazy, a total overhaul of the MMO with a kind of World of Warcraft 2.

BlizzCon 2022 having been canceled, we will have to be patient before an official announcement from Blizzard, unless the American giant does so independently, as for its survival game.
