The history of video games is not written solely through machines and the many productions that are emerging. The video game is also impressive records like that of BarryMode, a player who managed to finish Spelunky in 2 minutes and 30 seconds! At least, that's what we thought...

The gaming community has always been intrigued by this record and has never stopped investigating to have the final word on the authenticity of this speedrun, unbeaten for nearly 10 years.

A usurped title!

From the beginning, this story left the Spelunky community very skeptical and many elements were staining in this speedrun. Because even if some players have come as close as possible to the BarryMode record - one of them having reached 2 minutes 40 seconds -, no one has managed to equal or exceed it.

The players quickly said that there was a wolf, in particular because certain points did not stick in this exploit: BarryMode? Very little known in the speedrunning community! The run made by the player? Too fast ! The paths taken by the player? Illogical according to some seasoned speedrunners!

It is therefore with full of suspicion that the players went to the coal to find evidence capable of calling into question the veracity of this record. And the least we can say is that the players did not come back empty-handed, as evidenced by the video posted by XanarGear which details, thanks to all the information gleaned by the gaming community, the deception .

It has thus been proven, almost a decade later, that BarryMode was actually using a modified version of Spelunky capable of constantly replaying levels in order to find the optimal paths. Quickly contacted by Waypoint, the player confessed that he had cheated. The latter subsequently removed the video of his performance from the YouTube platform.
