Despite his old age, Portal first of the name has aged rather well thanks to the solid Source engine. But a recreation of its first level under Unreal Engine 5 leaves you wondering.

Taking advantage of the fact that the latest generation engine from Epic Games is accessible to everyone, Alf Does Stuff had fun reproducing the first iconic chamber of Portal and magnified everything with the famous ray tracing.

Welcome to Aperture Science Next-Gen

It's been fifteen years since Valve turned the world of video games upside down with the first Portal. Failing a Portal 3, which one of the franchise's writers would really like to make before he was too old, we got the free-to-play Aperture Desk Job, exclusive to the Steam Deck.

While waiting for Saint Gabe Newell to bless us with a new Portal game or a remake, we can lend ourselves to dreaming thanks to creators like Alf Does Stuff. With the help of the Unreal Engine 5, this one gives us a glimpse of what a next-gen remake of Portal would look like.

This recreation was made as part of a university project, and each asset from the first test chamber was recreated from scratch on the Unreal Engine 5. A titanic job in short, and it is therefore unlikely that Alf Does Stuff tackles the complete recreation of the game.

Still, the level of detail in this recreation commands respect. In any case, GLaDOS would have been satisfied with the test results and would have probably rewarded Alf Does Stuff with a good cake.
