PlayStation: Sony acquires Bungie, the creators of Halo and Destiny!

ยฉ Sony / Bungie

A few days after the takeover of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft, it's Sony's turn to hit the jackpot with a sizeable acquisition. Indeed, the Japanese manufacturer has just paid Bungie.

The good news is that players shouldn't be harmed by this takeover.

A takeover that does not change much?

It was via an article published on the eternal PlayStation Blog that the information fell. Bungie is now part of the big PlayStation family. The American company is well known to players since it is at the origin of planetary hits like Halo and Destiny. So what will happen to the studio's productions, and in particular Destiny 2, following this takeover?!

Sony played the card of transparency by stating that Bungie will operate independently as a developer and publisher. Thus, the teams will always work on titles that will be released on all media. So, Bungie does not integrate PlayStation Studios but rather comes enthroned alongside the organization. The manufacturer wants to "use the studio's expertise in cross-platform development and live game services" to expand the PlayStation brand around the world.

A not-so-new era for Bungie

If we are to believe the details published by GamesIndustry.biz, the acquisition is said to be worth around $3,6 billion and discussions have been held over the past five or six months. We can therefore imagine that the takeover of Activision Blizzard did not motivate this initiative on the part of Sony. Handsome player, Phil Spencer, the boss of Microsoft Gaming, congratulated the two companies on Twitter.

Always with a view to reassuring the different communities, Pete Parsons, the boss of Bungie, clarified that freedom will remain central to him and his teams.

โ€œWe remain masters of our destiny. We will continue to publish and develop our games independently. We will continue to lead a unified Bungie community. Our games will continue to be where our community is, wherever they choose to play.

With Sony's support, the most immediate change you will see is an acceleration of talent recruitment across the studio to support our ambitious vision. If this speaks to you and you want to help us make a dent in the universe, we are recruiting across all disciplines for Destiny 2 and all new worlds beyond.โ€

Whether you're on PlayStation, PC or even Xbox, Destiny 2 and the studio's future productions will follow you. Finally, Jim Ryan, the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, advised everyone to be ready because other takeovers will be announced soon.
