The latest game from the Remedy Entertainment studio has just received a patch aimed at optimizing its performance for the new generation of consoles. Control is therefore even more beautiful, even if we are quite far from the optimal rendering of the PC version.

The excellent YouTube channel called Digital Foundry returned to the technical characteristics of the title on PlayStation 5.

A truly ultimate version?

It was therefore this Tuesday, February 2 that Control received its next-gen update. Remember that it is only available for the Ultimate Edition of the title which includes the main story and the two DLCs. Unfortunately, the basic version released in August 2019 is not affected by this optimization which was however highly anticipated.

Thus, Digital Foundry has sifted through the technical specifics of Control Ultimate Edition on Sony's latest machine. The game is also available to PlayStation Plus subscribers during the month of February. It is important to note that the software benefits from two very distinct modes. We have on one side the one promoting performance, and on the other, the one putting Ray Tracing in the spotlight.

Good and less good

As reported by Digital Foundry, the whole is rather convincing. The “performance” mode holds the 60fps almost constantly. Some drops in framerate occur during the combat phases multiplying the effects (explosions, particles, etc.) on the screen. The finding is similar on Xbox Series X | S.

When the player switches to Ray Tracing mode, the frame rate drops to 30fps. Once again, the framerate is constant and only suffers drops on very rare occasions. Unfortunately, Ray Tracing does not benefit from rendering equivalent to that seen on PC. Reflections on opaque surfaces such as marble, metal and on glass are assured. The visual below allows you to discover the parameters that would be necessary on PC to run the PS5 version.

The resolution of the textures would barely be in "medium" and the quality of the shadows or even the foliage would only reach a "low" level. Many aspects of Ray Tracing would be completely disabled. In short, the PC still has a good head start.
