How to get Star Fragments in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

If you've come across Blathers sister Celeste, you might be wondering how to get Star Fragments in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The former Observatory Manager gives you several DIY recipes over time that require different numbers and types of Star Fragments.

That's great, but it's easy to forget how to get what you need - that's why we've put together this Animal Crossing: New Horizons Star Fragment guide.

How to get Star Fragments in Animal Crossing

Getting Star Fragments is quite simple. All you have to do is wish for a star. To do this, simply tilt the Right Stick up, wait for a star to break away from the firmament, and press "A" as it shoots across the sky.

When you'll actually get a meteor shower isn't completely certain. It only happens on clear nights, but it doesn't seem to happen every clear night. Sometimes your island neighbors give you a hint by mentioning how perfect the weather is for shooting stars.

Also, if Celeste is in your city, it's a guarantee that a meteor shower is in progress (but Celeste isn't an actual requirement).

Either way, it's much easier to tell if you've turned up the volume, as you'll hear a little flickering sound every time a star comes onto the scene.

Equally important, you are not limited with the number of stars you can want. You can only wish on each star once, but if you're looking to really rack up the number of star fragments you get, wish on each one you see.

The day after your star cravings (after the daily announcement, not after midnight), get out there and up and down the beaches. You will find star fragments proportional to the number of stars you want. Their nature, however, is another story.

Type of Star Fragments in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

There are three different types of shards:

  • Star Fragments
  • Large Star Fragments
  • Zodiac Star Fragments

Unfortunately, it seems completely random which type you get. That's why it's in your best interest to want as many as possible.

It also seems that your zodiac star fragments are determined by the astrological calendar:

  • Capricorn โ€“ December 22-January 19
  • Aquarius โ€“ January 20-February 18
  • Pisces โ€“ February 19-March 20
  • Aries โ€“ March 21-April 19
  • Taurus โ€“ April 20-May 20
  • Gemini โ€“ May 21-June 20
  • Cancer โ€“ June 21-July 22
  • Leo โ€“ July 23-August 22
  • Virgo โ€“ August 23 โ€“ September 22
  • Libra โ€“ September 23-October 22
  • Scorpio โ€“ October 23-November 21
  • Sagittarius โ€“ November 22-December 21

What are star fragments used for in Animal Crossing?

Star Fragments are used in various DIY recipes, and the one you're likely to get first is the Magic Wand. This, along with the many other variations (rabbit day wand, bamboo wand, flower wands, etc.) allow you to store outfits and change them into costumes on the fly.

There's also a range of actual star-themed items, and you'll need star shards and large star shards for space furniture set this time around.

Finally, the Zodiac Celeste set gives you a recipe for each month. So far we have the Aries rocking chair and the Taurus bath, but there are other time travelers. If you don't want to wait to complete the set, that's always an option too.
