Setting up a new club, if that's what you choose to do, won't be easy as you'll find yourself competing with the giants of the footballing world in the transfer market.

Each season, players terminate their contracts in the hope of getting an even bigger salary from their current club or securing a substantial signing bonus if they try their hand at a new location. In the 2021 off-season, we've already seen Sergio Ramos move to Paris Saint-Germain on such a deal, and the GOAT himself Lionel Messi is currently making Barcelona sweat as he too is yet to sign a new contract.

So with that kind of value in the market, being on the hunt for free agents in FIFA 22 Career Mode is a no-brainer, and to help you in your quest we've compiled a list of the top 20 free agents, all be available to sign contracts from January 1, as long as they do not sign a new contract with their current clubs during your backup.

FIFA 22 Career Mode Best Free Agents

Free agents come in all shapes and sizes; the youngsters who were with their boyhood clubs but didn't sign improved deals when they made the first team, those at the top of their game who timed their contracts expertly, or the legends who a few more years at the top. They are a great way for all teams to squeeze every penny out of their transfer budgets.

It should be noted that the players listed below cannot be signed as free agents in the first transfer window, but you can sign them from the 1er January 2022, although they would not arrive until the following summer after their contracts expired.

Take note: Players nearing the end of their contract can sometimes be snapped up 'cheaper', as clubs look to sell an asset that will soon be leaving for free.

1. Kylian Mbappé – ST

PSG's Mbappé is the player most likely to take over from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo when these two - if they ever do - leave the world of football.

The French striker already has a burgeoning trophy cabinet, much of it helped playing for domestically dominating PSG, but also for his spell in Spain where he already got his hands on the World Cup.

Sure, his summer hasn't been the easiest, the scapegoat for that same Spain team that flattered to deceive at the Euros, but there's no doubt he's got the talent, the determination and the attitude to embark on ever greater things.

His contract would have ended in the summer of 2022, and although PSG are very likely to tie him down to a new deal, the prospect of getting him for free will be there.

Don't miss it because it won't.

2. Leon Goretzka – CM

Goretzka has always been known as a prodigious talent, however, in the two years since he signed for Bayern Munich, he has established himself as one of the most complete central midfielders in the world.

He can do anything; boasting ferocious shooting, magic in his feet and a deft reading of the game. His contract, like everyone else on this list, is up next summer, and at 26 you would sign a player entering its peak.

3. Raphael Varane – CB

Everyone is talking about the fact that Varane could be set to leave Real Madrid this summer, with Manchester United and PSG both looking to buy the French CB who has one year left on his contract.

What they would get was a world-class centre-back who, at 28, has won it all, including three league titles, four Champions Leagues and the World Cup.

Whether or not Varane stays on this free agent list remains to be seen, but if he does, he's the best defender you could possibly pick for free.

4. Paul Pogba – CM

Pogba, oh Pogba. No one can doubt the man's talent, but many doubt his attitude when it comes to transferring those skills week after week for his club.

The rumor mill has been swirling for years over a potential move, with Barcelona and a return to Juventus being two possible destinations. Where he ends up and how are the big question marks, as the idea of him ending his career at Manchester United - at this point - seems ridiculous.

His contract ends in the summer of 22, do you have what it takes to get the best out of him?

5. Cristiano Ronaldo – ST

The only reason this man (god?) isn't higher on the list is purely because of his age, albeit in a perverse way that seems quite unfair to even bring the number of years (36) that he was on this planet in because this number had no direct consequences on his impact on the ground.

Ronaldo means goals, a fact he proved again with Juventus last season and with Portugal at the Euros. He is still a player at the top of his game.

Getting it for free, even at age 37, would be a ridiculous deal.
