Battlefield 2042 will become a shared universe and change bosses

In addition to the deployment of urgent patches on Battlefield 2042, Electronic Arts is making drastic changes to develop a shared universe for the franchise.

While DICE's latest FPS received a massive patch today, the direction of the franchise is changing with the former boss of Respawn Entertainment now at its helm. The publisher also intends to develop a real Battlefield universe using different studios, including one led by Marcus Lehto, co-creator of the Halo license.

Tornado over the Battlefield universe

Victim of a chaotic launch and a massive review-bombing, Battlefield 2042 is slowly recovering from its injuries. Despite this, we have deplored departures at DICE, such as that of its chief designer. Today, we learn that Oskar Gabrielson is leaving his position as game manager at the studio and that the boss of Respawn Entertainment is now placed at the head of the Battlefield franchise.

The choice of words is not insignificant, since Electronic Arts intends to have several concert studios work together to develop a shared universe in the future depicted by Battlefield 2042. The very recent studio directed by Marcus Lehto will, for example, be responsible for developing its history and its characters. Ripple Effect, the studio in charge of the Battlefield Portal mode, would work on its side on a new Battlefield experience.

Let's not forget the famous Battlefield Mobile project, expected in 2022. Fans of the license will therefore certainly not miss new features in the months and years to come. Hoping that Battlefield 2042 will be able to recover from its first mistakes, at the risk of putting the whole universe that Electronic Arts is trying to build around the game in danger.
